What is Church Planting?

Some churches may establish a brand-new worshipping community through a CHURCH PLANT, either within the same parish or a different one. The new church reaches a group of people not currently reached by the established church. Church plants could be lay or clergy led, could meet in schools/cafes or community buildings, and often they are a creative, fresh expression of church relevant to that context.

Some parishes are rejuvenated and renewed for mission through the process of REVITALISATION - planting within a current structure, but with fresh vision for growth under new leadership. Revitalisations are in strategically placed centres and have a distinct focus on renewing evangelism, multiplying the number of new Christians, multiplying leadership, discipleship and growing the church.

Churches may identify an opportunity to establish a NEW CONGREGATION to reach and disciple new groups of people not currently engaged in church. This new service or weekly meeting would have a different pattern or style to it, though most often within the existing church building or church hall, with focused content to connect with a distinct demographic.

Planting could also be about establishing a MISSIONAL COMMUNITY. These are usually smaller groups, often meeting in homes or public spaces. Typically these communities are lay-led as they grow community and deepen discipleship and mission together, being an incarnational presence wherever they are as they seek to share Jesus with those around them.
