Community Development Workers (Communities Together Durham)

Durham Diocese has some of the highest levels of poverty in the country, including child poverty. Responding to, and challenging poverty has been a priority of the diocese for the last eight years.  The ‘Challenging Poverty’ project, delivered by Communities Together Durham, helps to resource and enable this ministry.

We are looking for new team members with the passion and skills and passion to support clergy and congregations in parishes across the diocese to understand their context better and discern how they can most appropriately address issues of poverty and injustice.  You will be joining a team committed to working together to develop and promote activities that enable clergy and churches respond to local need through loving service, and to challenge unjust structures of society.

You will need experience of working in a community development context, facilitation skills, and knowledge of the structure and workings of the Church of England.  You will want to work with churches and community groups to inspire and support them to deliver activities that involve the whole community and make a real contribution to well-being in the most challenging circumstances.  The job description and person specification have more details.

The post requires some flexible hours including some evenings and weekends and occasional residential meetings.  We are looking for 1 or 2 people to join the team, and these could be full or part-time (17.5-35 hours) to be discussed at interview and agreed with the successful candidates.  The post has funding until December 2026.
