A long-serving church musician is set to receive a prestigious Nicholson Award for his services to the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) in the Durham Area.
Michael Grave (pictured above) is director of music at St Mary the Virgin, Whickham, where he has led the music for almost 50 years.
Each year, the RSCM Council confers Honorary Awards on those who have made outstanding contributions to church music. They will be presented at St Albans Cathedral in October, at a special service where the music will be directed by David Hill, former sub-organist at Durham Cathedral.
The RSCM said Michael had a long-standing association with the organisation, actively promoting its work in publicity and marketing, and had invited church choirs to join with his own choir in massed choir events. He had also supported RSCM initiatives such as Music Sunday, Songs of Praise and training events, it said.
Over the years, Michael has carried out various roles on the RSCM Durham Area Committee, including Gateshead West Deanery Rep, Education and Training Officer and Publicity Officer.
As he prepares to receive the award, Michael expressed his gratitude to all who have supported him, including his family, the rectors and congregation at St Mary’s.
A member and ex-president of Newcastle & District Society of Organists, Michael was for many years a part time lay clerk in Newcastle Cathedral Choir.
During the coronavirus pandemic, the retired chartered chemical and nuclear engineer received an Angel Award, alongside his wife Jean, from Blaydon MP Liz Twist for their work in keeping music active in Whickham during the pandemic.
Michael said his health and safety experience, gained in the chemical and nuclear industries, proved helpful in promoting safe working within the church and choir.
He gives thanks that two wonderful careers as a chartered engineer and church musician have been so fulfilling, intertwined and exciting.
