On Saturday 13 July, youth groups from across our Diocese joined together for our summer The Pulse event for a pilgrimage to Holy Island.
Despite the grey skies and light rain, it was a wonderful day walking the three miles across the sand of the Pilgrim’s Way. All of the young people remained positive, enjoying the opportunity to connect with each other, with the beautiful surroundings and with God as they walked, talked, prayed and sang!
Children’s Council also enjoyed visiting Holy Island. Although they didn’t walk the causeway, they had a brilliant day of discovery and journeying together.
Their day began with a treasure hunt but as the rain became heavier, it was decided that an ice-cream break would be a good idea before heading to St. Mary’s Church. From there the group made their way down to the beach opposite St Cuthbert’s Island and enjoyed collecting some shells and sea glass.
A spot of souvenir shopping in the village followed before heading back to the village hall for worship time together and then time to eat!
For most of the children, this was their first time on Holy Island and there were many questions, much wondering and lots of talking about St Cuthbert, St Aidan (including why he was holding in ice cream!) and how Holy Island came to be what it is today.
Many thanks to all the leaders and helpers who made such a great day possible.
