VE Day Services and Celebrations

On the 8th May, the nation will be commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Here are some of the services and celebrations taking place throughout our diocese. 

Durham Cathedral, VE80 commemoration at the cathedral: https://www.durhamcathedral.co.uk/events/evensong-ve80.

A special evensong service at Durham Cathedral taking place at 5.30pm, all are welcome. National bell ringing event Ring Out at 6.30pm and the cathedral will be lit from 9pm on Tuesday 6 May, Wednesday 7 May and VE Day Thursday 8 May.

St John's Church, Jarrow, VE Day service and celebration event, Thursday 8 May: https://www.facebook.com/StJohnsChurchJarrow/

St Helen's, Kelloe, Thursday 8th May, 6.15pm VE Day memorial service and 6.30pm bells ring

Willington VE day celebrations and service, 8 May:

  • 11.00am Act of Remembrance, George Burdon McKean Memorial next to the Library
  • 6.30pm Ringing of Church Bells, The bells at St Stephen’s Church will be rung in celebration.
  • 9.15pm Beacon Lighting Ceremony, Beacon Brazier, Dante’s Heap.

VE Day Shincliffe Village Green, 9.00pm Lamps of Peace, Thursday, 8 May: Our church members and community will light lamps as Lights of Peace. Before we light the fire-pit there will be three short prayers from the published VE Day service sheet and we will sing, ‘I Vow To Thee My Country, standing side by side in gratitude, honouring the many sacrifices that secured our freedom. Then we will take in the evening air, hot chocolate will be available. Or bring your own small drink and a torch.

St John the Baptist, Greatham, Thursday 8 May, 2pm, Special VE Day service

St James, Burnopfield, Morning Prayer commemorating VE Day, Sunday 4 May, 11am
