The sound of celebration filled the air in Hartlepool on the evening of 1st November, as the eight bells of Stranton All Saints Church rang out to mark the launch of a year-long programme of events celebrating the church’s 900th anniversary.
Parishioners, local residents and friends gathered at the historic church to witness the momentous occasion and show their support for the dedicated team of bellringers. Guests enjoyed an evening of fellowship, homemade refreshments and the opportunity to share stories and memories of the church that has stood at the heart of the Hartlepool community for nine centuries.
Revd John Bell, Priest in Charge, expressed his gratitude to those who made the evening special.
“We are so very grateful to our dedicated band of bellringers who ring regularly for our Sunday services, calling people to worship God,” he said. “It was wonderful to have their support at the launch of our celebrations, kicking things off with a Quarter Peal of Plain Bob Major. Thank you also to friends who joined the ringing band for the evening.”
Revd Bell also highlighted the contributions of parishioners helping to shape the anniversary year, including a young ringer who designed the official 900th anniversary logo displayed at the event. He encouraged everyone to continue sharing photos and memories that capture the life of Stranton Church through the ages.
Assistant Curate Revd Claire Mead spoke with enthusiasm about the packed calendar of celebrations planned for the coming year.
“Our anniversary team are really excited about the services and events ahead,” she said. “Everyone is welcome to join in! We’ll be launching a new monthly evening service, Sundays@6, on 16 November, and there’s plenty more to look forward to — including a wedding exhibition on 14 February, a community fun afternoon at Ward Jackson CofE Primary School next summer, and even a tower abseil!”
As preparations continue, the church is appealing to anyone with personal connections to Stranton All Saints — especially couples married there — to share their memories and photographs for inclusion in the “Stranton Weddings Through the Years” exhibition planned for 2026.
Those wishing to contribute can contact the Parish Office via admin@stranton-church.org.uk or by calling 01429 894006.
Updates about upcoming anniversary services and community activities will be shared regularly on the church’s Facebook page and in local media.
Stranton All Saints Church has been a centre of Christian worship and community life in Hartlepool since medieval times — and as the bells rang out once more, the celebrations for its remarkable 900-year history began in joyful harmony.
