Royal Maundy Service returns to Durham Diocese after 50 years

Durham Cathedral will host the Royal Maundy Service for the first time in over 50 years, with His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen in attendance.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will present Maundy money to 152 recipients - 76 men and 76 women, reflecting the King’s age - honouring their exceptional Christian service. The recipients, selected from across the Province of York, Wales, and Scotland, include nearly half selected from the Diocese of Durham.

The Right Revd Sarah Clark, Bishop of Jarrow and Acting Bishop of Durham, expressed her joy at Durham’s selection for this “very special occasion” and the surprise and pleasure of those selected.

“This was not a task that I was anticipating would fall to me during my time as acting diocesan bishop, and I am grateful to those who assisted me in the confidential process of collating Anglican and ecumenical nominees.

“This will be a very special occasion, as it is over 50 years since the Royal Maundy Service was held here and I am delighted that Durham has been chosen. It has been lovely to hear stories of the surprise and joy of those who now know that they will receive Maundy Money.”

The historic service will take place at Durham Cathedral on Thursday, 17 April at 11.00am.
