A community shop which provides everyday food essentials has re-opened today in a bigger and more spacious venue.
Shop4All is part of Hope4All, the community initiative in Pennywell, Sunderland, which was launched by Durham Diocese in 2020.
Based at St Thomas’ Church, Pennywell, Hope4All is gradually moving its community services into the neighbouring building, known as @NextDoor Centre.
The shelves were moved and restocked in preparation for the re-opening on Monday 13 May at 11am where Claire Hogg was invited to cut the ribbon and officially launch the revamped shop.
The initiative’s business and media lead Lea Mason said Shop4All complements the community food bank by offering price-friendly food and drink for those who need it.
“We’re excited about the re-launch,” said Lea. “The new shop is more spacious and brighter with better ventilation. We are very much looking forward to welcoming people through the door.”
They have already had feedback from customers about how fresh and vibrant the new space feels.
As well as the shop, Hope4All runs a community café and also provides support with money management for those who need it, as well as help with CVs and job searches. There are also youth services, including a holiday club.
The initiative receives support from Sunderland City Council. It works closely with Sunderland Foodbank and also works with supermarkets to obtain surplus food. Shop revenue is another key source of funding.
Hope4All is grateful to the hard work of volunteers and also to those who make generous donations.
The shop is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 11am to 2pm, and on Wednesdays from 1pm to 3pm. Visit the Hope4All Facebook page here
Hope4All recently welcomed Sharon Hodgson, the Labour MP for Washington and Sunderland West, who explored the exciting plans for it’s various provisions at the @NextDoor Centre.
