“From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised”. (Psalm 113)
The recent announcement of the anticipated launch of GATHER: God's Tent in Teesdale marks the introduction of an exciting new church plant within the diocese's innovative strategy for church expansion. GATHER, a "roaming church community," adeptly blends together diverse rural spaces by seamlessly transitioning between indoor and outdoor environments, showcasing the exquisite beauty and spiritual inspiration found in rural church settings in a different way.
On the 10th of July, the picturesque grounds of Alwent Hall near Staindrop in County Durham provided the ideal backdrop for the launch event. Despite an afternoon shower, the rain cleared, giving way to a radiant sun that shone brightly upon the beginning of this pioneering initiative. Attendees were captivated by the breathtaking magnificence of God's creation as they joyfully sang a contemporary rendition of the beloved hymn, 'How Great Thou Art.'
The GATHER team warmly welcomed approximately 45 enthusiastic attendees who wanted to try GATHER for themselves. The Revd Canon Michael Everitt from Durham Cathedral spoke passionately on Jesus’ meeting the Samaritan Woman at the well and how that invitation is open to us all today. It was a special moment when Michael realised that the reading from John 4 was taken from Sheila Jones' (one of the GATHER team) personal Bible, the very edition and version to which Michael had contributed supporting material. Furthermore, we were blessed with a Prayer Space housed in a greenhouse with a water feature symbolising a well at the entrance. The prayer space provided a literal warm welcome and the team offered prayer ministry to all who sought it.
At the core of GATHER's essence lies a spirit of generous hospitality, a key highlight of the launch event. Mary and Stephen, gracious hosts, generously opened their rural farm to accommodate the Gathering, providing a delectable BBQ spread along with homemade scones and cakes for dessert. They were ably supported by members of St. Andrew's Church, Winston, who enthusiastically lent their aid in ensuring the success of the launch. Engaging conversations flowed freely as attendees revelled in the awe-inspiring beauty of Teesdale, truly embracing the splendour of God's creation. Mary herself said “I could not have felt closer to God looking across his stunning creation that was the view from the GATHER service. It made me feel quite humble and extremely lucky to be able to worship in such a stunning part of the world”.
Claire Mead, one of the leaders of GATHER, expressed her gratitude and reflection on the evening, stating, “We were blessed with a great evening! The sun shone and the beauty of God’s creation surrounded us. It was amazing to sing praises to God in such a wonderful setting. Many attendees approached our team, expressing their heartfelt appreciation for the remarkable environment we had been blessed with."
The next GATHER event
Looking ahead, GATHER eagerly prepares for its upcoming event—a pilgrimage day in Durham scheduled for the 19th of August. Tom Deakin, another leader of GATHER, shared his profound passion for exploring the great outdoors as he leads participants on this spiritual journey. He elaborated, "Our next event will encompass an Urban Pilgrimage to Durham Cathedral to take in the fantastic Gaia exhibition, which feels so timely given the recent news of heat-waves and climate concerns. We’re going to be gently travelling along the banks of the river where we will immerse ourselves in the natural splendour that envelops us. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the cathedral for hosting us in the serene Holy Cross Chapel, providing a space for private prayer, worship and reflection."
