Chaplain supports Durham Army Cadets at annual camp

Reverend Brian Whitley, Priest-in-Charge of the Gaunless Valley Parishes, once again dedicated his time to supporting young people during their military training this summer. As he does throughout the year on military weekends and at Durham Army Cadet Force Annual Camps, Brian provided guidance and encouragement to the cadets, helping them make the most of their experience.

This year's camp, held at Queen Elizabeth Barracks near York, saw over 500 Army Cadets, aged 12 to 18, from County Durham, gather for two weeks of intensive training. The camp offered a range of activities, including fieldcraft training, weapons handling, shooting practice, and expedition and First Aid training. These exercises provided the cadets with valuable new skills and experiences.

A new initiative introduced this year was the "Welfare Hub," aimed at supporting the cadets' health and resilience. The hub offered a variety of activities, including film screenings, games, water activities and socialising opportunities at a café and shop, giving the young cadets a chance to build lasting friendships with peers from across the region.

In his role as Chaplain, Brian participated in many of the camp’s activities, serving as an "independent listener" for the cadets. His presence allowed the young people to feel supported as they navigated the challenges of the camp. One highlight of the camp, according to Brian, is always the final church parade, where he leads a service for the cadets. Many of them, who might not usually attend church, appreciate this opportunity to reflect on their experiences.

Reflecting on his role, Brian said it is a great privilege to serve as an Army Cadet Chaplain, noting how the experience truly embodies the Army Cadet motto: “Inspiring to Achieve.” Through his involvement, Brian plays a key part in helping shape the lives of young people in the community.
