On the 26th October St Simon’s South Shields, which is now part of the Parish of Jarrow and Simonside, celebrated 150 years since the original parish of St Simon’s was created.
This anniversary has set in motion a celebration set to last five years as the parish give thanks for God’s faithfulness to the community before marking the 150th anniversary of the consecration of the church building in 2030.
Revd Andrew McAllister, curate in the Parish of Jarrow and Simonside, said: “This anniversary is an extremely special one for us here in Jarrow and Simonside. As we give thanks to God for the faithful worship and service in this place over the past 150 years, it also gives us an opportunity to look forward and, over the next five years, pray that the Holy Spirit might renew and revive us as we look forward to the next phase of mission and ministry in this place.”
To celebrate this big milestone, a special service was held on 26th October and the parish welcomed Revd Canon David Kennedy to preach and preside. David grew up on the Simonside estate and attended St Simon’s as a young boy and the parish were overjoyed to welcome him back to celebrate this special occasion.
The service was also attended by a number of civic guests including His Majesty’s Deputy Lord-Lieutenant for Tyne and Wear, Colonel Ann Clouston and the Mayoress of South Tyneside, Audrey Huntley. Ms Huntley said: “It was an absolute honour to join the Parish of St Simon Church in celebrating its remarkable 150th anniversary. This milestone is a testament to the enduring spirit of faith, community, and service that has shaped generations. The dedication of everyone involved in preserving this beautiful heritage is truly inspiring, and I was proud to share in such a special occasion.”
Alongside the celebrations in church, the Parish also partnered with local school, Lord Blyton Primary School, to create a commemorative banner for the anniversary which is now being displayed in the church. The banner involved a contribution from every student in the school and is a testament to the ongoing, strong relationship between the school and the church.
Jo Atherton, head teacher at Lord Blyton Primary School said: “Lord Blyton Primary School has strong community links with St Simon's Church. Over the years we have developed a very positive working relationship with the church. They not only support us with our curriculum but the personal development of our pupils and we enjoy attending the church for festivals and celebrations which is a valuable experience for all pupils.
"Members of the Church community regularly visit school and Reverend Lesley and Reverend Andrew are familiar faces. Each year the relationship grows stronger and stronger. Long may this continue!”
