Children at a Durham Church of England school have been working on designs for the Bishop of Jarrow’s Christmas card.

Pupils at St Hild’s College CE (Aided) Primary School, in Renny’s Lane, Gilesgate, Durham, were asked to design cards for the Right Reverend Mark Bryant, and the winner was Year Four pupil Lucas Jones for what the Bishop calls a ‘wonderful’ design featuring the Angel of the North.

The Bishop said: “One of the reasons I do this each year is that church schools are an important part of life in the diocese. Every day we teach 14,000 children and young people, which is a significant contribution.

“I ask schools to design my Christmas card because it makes sense to go where the ideas and creativity are and I chose St Hild’s this year because they have always me feel welcome.”

Alex Ryder, the Acting Headteacher, said: “We have a special relationship with the bishop and this was a special and wonderful opportunity for our children.

“They put a lot of thought into making sure that their designs reflected not just Christmas but also the North East of England.

“They will be proud that one of their designs will be sent all the way round the region.”
