We are looking to appoint a good-humoured, confident and dedicated priest to join us in the Parish of Jarrow at a time when we are moving towards joining formally with the Parish of South Shields, St Simon’s. This is an exciting time of working together and new horizons. For the past three years the priest-in-charge of St Simon’s has also had a half-time appointment as Associate Minister in Jarrow, and following her recent retirement we are seeking a full time ordained colleague, who will share with our Priest-in-Charge and Assistant Curate in leading and shaping the ministry and mission in the new parish.
- Closing date: 20th September 2018
- Interviews: 5th October 2018
The Parish of Jarrow has three churches: St. Paul’s, the ancient Parish Church, established in 681AD, where the Venerable Bede spent his life as a monk and did his writing, is situated close to the river Tyne and is on the edge of the town. The modern churches of St. Peter and St. John the Baptist serve areas of varied housing, including some large estates, in other parts of the town. The parish of St Simon’s has one church.
Jarrow, despite its well-documented industrial and sometimes difficult past, is now a pleasant North-Eastern town well-served by extremely successful schools and other essential amenities. However, in spite of the regeneration, unemployment and deprivation are ever present in this part of the North, as they are elsewhere.
