Event Notification

The importance of Church music will be celebrated at a special event being held in Newcastle on May 17. Great North Organ Day will be staged between 10am and 5.30pm at Newcastle’s two great Cathedrals of St Mary (Catholic) and St Nicholas (Anglican) as well as St John the Baptist Church, in Grainger Street. The programme includes : St Nicholas Cathedral:

10.20 James Lancelot – Beyond the Organ Bench – an insight into the world of the organ from the Organist & Master of the Choristers at Durham Cathedral

10.40 Rosemary Field – Advice on how to start the organ from the Education Director of the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) 11.20 James Norrey – Organ Interlude There will be demonstrations taking place throughout the day in St Nicholas Cathedral Refectory. Among the many other events is: 13.10 Gordon Stewart – An inspirational recital by Concert Organist Gordon Stewart, known from the BBC’s “Songs of Praise” programme, on the new Kenneth Tickell organ in St Mary’s RC Cathedral. Attendees for the event will come from as far away as Manchester and Fife. Organiser Michael Grave, Director of Music at Anglican Whickham St Mary the Virgin in the Diocese of Durham and Publicity Officer for the RSCM Durham Area, said: “This event will help those who have been appointed an organ scholar or those churches who possibly only have a pianist who does or does not play the organ but with knowledge and up-skilling could move in that direction and act as an organist or deputy.”
