The Diocese of Durham has strengthened its focus on poverty with the release of an information film titled ‘Why Wouldn’t You?’ The short film release today (4th April 2014), features the Bishops of Durham and Jarrow reinforce their challenge to parishes and church members to get involved and actively support their local credit union / community bank. The Film titled ‘Why Wouldn’t You? uses interview pieces with two Durham based credit unions / community banks, their staff, customers and depositors as well as the Bishops of Durham and Jarrow to explore what it means to the community as a whole to get involved. The challenge was set at the Diocesan Synod in November 13 to encourage and recruit one thousand members of churches to get behind their local credit union and become new members.

The Right Revd Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham said: “Because I believe in credit unions and want to support them, not only am I still a member in Nottingham, on the day it was announced I would be coming to Durham I made a point of joining NorthEast First credit union. I am committed to being involved with them myself as well as encouraging other people to do so.” The Right Revd Mark Bryant, Bishop of Jarrow said: “This is not just a Church of England thing, we can take this opportunity to talk with our friends and neighbours in other churches, so that right across this bit of the north east we can really give this credit unions the boast that they need so that they can go on doing the amazing work that is making a real difference to peoples lives.” After exploring the work of the credit unions and the risk free nature of depositing with them as a member the film asks the important question of ‘Why Wouldn’t You?, that is why wouldn’t you get involved deposit with them and use their products and facilities to your own benefit and that of the wider community. Lesley Richardson, Manager of Prince Bishops Community Bank said: “Credit Unions and Community banks provide access for everybody to save, to access affordable credit and to get into the habit of managing their money. Depositing money with any credit union or community bank is risk free and keeps the money in the community – so why wouldn’t you?” The film has been produced to aid churches across the diocese to encourage their members and the local community to join.
