Andrew Thurston – Diocesan Secretary for Durham Diocese
The Anglican Diocese of Durham has appointed a new Diocesan Secretary. Andrew Thurston, who previously worked in Lincolnshire, will work closely with new Bishop of Durham The Right Reverend Paul Butler, who was enthroned on Saturday (Feb 22). Before taking up the post, Andrew was chief executive of business organisation Lincolnshire Enterprise then worked as a community pharmacist in the county for two years. He said: “There are similarities between my jobs at Lincolnshire Enterprise and as Diocesan Secretary. “Both jobs are to do with securing the resources needed to bring about success; in this case the growth of the Church, something that Bishop Paul identified as a priority during his enthronement. “Part of my job is about working with the community, business and civic leaders to ensure we address the needs of the communities we serve. “My first job is to understand where we are, talking to people in the diocese and understanding what they think we need to do. It is about listening to people. That is very important. “After I have done that, I will be be able to work with the Bishop to bring about our priorities. The Bishop will want to move and move fast.” He added: “I have had a very positive impression of the North East. I am very impressed with how friendly the people are. This is an area with a lot of potential.”
