The Bishop of Durham will pray from the top of Durham Cathedral’s tower at an event organised to celebrate the power of prayer. Spiritus 2014, which is to be staged on Saturday September 6 at Durham Cathedral and in surrounding streets, will allow people to examine the role of prayer in the everyday life of the region. One of the attractions will be the Right Revd Paul Butler saying prayers from the top of the Cathedral tower. Fiona Fidgin, Outreach Coordinator at St Antony’s Priory, Durham, who is organising the event, said: “Prayer and pilgrimage have been part of the story of the North East for centuries. Last year, we saw a major pilgrimage to Holy Island and the visit of the Lindisfarne Gospels to Durham and we want to continue the momentum with Spiritus 14. “The day will focus on ways to make prayer more meaningful, rather than a box you tick and say ‘there, I’ve done that‘. “The Bishop of Durham is very keen to say his prayers loudly from the top of the tower. We are taught to say prayers silently while kneeling in church but there are different ways of praying and connecting with God. “Spiritus 14 is a way of taking prayer out to people and letting them know that there are different ways to go about prayer.” Among those also taking part in the day will be the Anglican Bishop of Jarrow the Right Revd Mark Bryant and the Right Revd Seamus Cunningham, the Catholic bishop of Hexham and Newcastle. The day will include:

  • Workshops for children, young people and youth/children’s workers
  • Events running in the Cathedral, available to anybody that comes to the Spiritus 14 event as well as tourists and visitors
  • Various organisations are having market stalls in the Cathedral, handing out information, and trade stalls will be based in the Cloisters
  • Prayer walks around the river and in the Cathedral
  • Two Cathedral services
  • People out on the streets handing out blessing cards and doing random acts of kindness, including healings
