The Rt Revd Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham says he has been amazed by great people with great stories and fantastic green spaces amongst the highlights of his first Prayer Walk in Gateshead West Deanery. Bishop Paul, is near completing the first of two Prayer Walks (Sunday 17th May) for 2015 in the Diocese of Durham which will form a cycle of 8 years of such prayer walks through the 16 Deaneries of the Diocese. Each Prayer Walk last 4 days, during which he walks, talks and prays with people in the community and gets to learn more about their lives and that of the wider community. Bishop Paul said: “I have been amazed at the splendour of the green spaces here in Gateshead. I knew that the area was made up of both rural and urban areas – but the amount of green space and opportunity for people to get out and enjoy the fresh air has been a very pleasant surprise.

“But the real delight of this first Prayer Walk has been the generosity and welcome of people I have met as we have walked around the Deanery. People have been very open and willing to talk about their own stories, about the community, the challenges and opportunities faced in the area and to Pray and be Prayed for. “For me this is why doing these Prayer Walks is such a joy and is so valuable in getting to know the people and the communities of the Diocese, I am very much looking forward to the next one in Durham next week.”
