2016 National Conference on the Deanery logoThe 15th National Conference on the Deanery took place in October 2016, and was themed around More for Less: Deaneries in Renewal and Reform. Revd Canon Sheila Bamber, Canon Provost of Sunderland Minster, and Revd Canon David Brooke, Deanery Planning Adviser, represented Durham Diocese at what was a well-attended and stimulating conference.

The main sessions were:

  • Thy Kingdom Come – the deanery and evangelism and witness
    Emma Buchan, Project Leader for the Archbishops’ Evangelism Task Group
  • The role of deaneries in the Renewal and Reform agenda
    Canon John Spence, Finance Chair of the Archbishops’ Council
  • Reimagining ministry – what deaneries can do
    Revd Canon Dr Roger Matthews, Dean of Mission in the Diocese of Chelmsford
  • My deanery and me (plenary and reflections)
    Rt Revd Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath and Wells

In addition there were optional seminars on:

  • Full-time rural and area deans – from relationships to mission
    Tim Norwood, full-time Area Dean of Milton Keynes
  • Mission and ministry online
    Dr Roz Clarke, Online Pastor in the Diocese of Lichfield
  • Making waves – using communications to inform and shape mission
    Ali Burnett, journalist and broadcaster
